Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, Tarpon Springs

Visit Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, one of the world's leading natural sponge markets. Since 1890, the sponge harvesting industry had been developing in this small seaside resort. Divers from Greece were brought to the United States, and they would use diving equipment to collect these aquatic animals and prepare them for sale. At the beginning of the 20th century, the resort became known as the Sponge Capital of the World. Today, you can learn about the sponge harvesting industry at the site, hear about its history, and buy sponges to use for bathing, decorating, and cleaning. Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Tarpon Springs Edition.

  • Great variety of shops and restaurants. I do not recommend a restaurant named Yiannis. Poor service, I had fish and chips. Chips we're good but the fish was so small with plenty of batter. Parking cost is very reasonable at $5.00.
  • Its really great for sunny weather and salty air. Many places to shop and eat. You may even go on a boat tour. Sponges everywhere. Many specialty shops like a candystore a fudge maker a soap maker a place to taste exotic fruit wines an aquarium. Family friendly must pay to park. Angry questions just ask?
  • Have now been here 2 times and enjoyed it even more this time. The people are always so friendly and helpful. Shopping and food were both great. Live entertainer played violin well. Clean area. Even one guy was cutting sponges on his boat and gave my daughter one. That was the icing on the cake to a great time here.
  • If you like Greek food this is the place with many options. Dolphin cruises and site seeing trips are available at affordable prices. It's tough to beat the dessert shops along the sponge docks. You do have to pay for parking but deals are there to be had, some shops even work with you on credit towards parking if you purchase something in their shop.
  • Beautiful small town to walk with love ones. I enjoy taking nice walks with good food, music, shops, and many entertainments. Reasonable prices to go on dolphin tours and reasonable prices on clothes. Good Greek food and cheap parking. Very beautiful.
