#1 of 11 in Things to do in Safety Harbor
Philippe Park is a Pinellas County park located in Safety Harbor, Florida. The park is named after Count Odet Philippe, who is credited with introducing grapefruit to Florida. It is situated on 122acre that was once part of Philippe's plantation. Philippe was the county's first non-native settler, arriving in 1842. Philippe is buried in the park but the exact location is undetermined.A Tocobaga Indian mound that is situated in the park is a National Historic Landmark known as the Safety Harbor Site. The temple mound is one of the last remnants of the Tocobaga on the Pinellas Peninsula. Records indicate that Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, the founder of St. Augustine, Florida, visited the site in 1566 to help broker a truce between the Tocobaga and the Calusa to the south. During the visit Pedro Menéndez founded a Spanish outpost nearby, but by 1567 it was reported to have been wiped out by the Tocobaga. Eventually the temple mound was deserted. The Tocobaga succumbed to European diseases, and many were forced into slavery working in the Caribbean.

  • This is a nice, clean park. There's fishing, paved walking trails, historical point of interest, large shelters for parties or smaller picnic tables scattered through out the park, playground equipment, restrooms, grassy areas with sun or shady areas to play in and waterfront views. It's only a four star rating since I didn't see any sports related type trails or courts. Still a gorgeous spot and certainly worth a visit!
  • Beautiful bay side park. Excellent pavilions and facilities for parties and bbqs. Several play grounds for the kids. Great views walking along the waterside pathway. There is historical significance here as well with educational opportunities. Book pavilions far in advance as the spots full up fast.
  • By far the best way to spend a few hours. Take some family or friends and set up at one of the many covered picnic areas, go walking by the shore, or take a bike ride through the park. You can't go wrong and the sea breeze keeps the heat down a little bit. Take a camera, so very many things to catch the eye.
  • I love this park. I grew up next door to the park and used to love to take relaxing runs through it and use the park facilities. The play grounds are wonderful for kids and the picnic areas offer wonderful places to enjoy an outdoor meal.
  • A great park on the water. Plenty of shade for a great picnic. Lots of shelters. Clean restrooms. Great place to power walk.
