Truman Little White House, Key West

4.6
#1 of 14 in Historic Sites in Key West
A taste of presidential history, Truman Little White House offers guided tours of rooms filled with original furnishings and memorabilia. This house, originally built in 1890 for officers of the local naval base, served as Truman's winter residence for a total of 175 days during about a dozen vacations. Though many of Truman's private possessions still lie scattered about the rooms, he was not the only notable figure to spend time in the house. Thomas Edison lived here during World War I, and presidents John F. Kennedy and Bill Clinton used the house for government functions. The interior is open for guided tours only, but you can walk around the surrounding botanical gardens on your own. • Due to having a busy schedule, we could not enter, but took a stroll around and took pictures on the front, as well as entering a first free room. It's a piece of history of North America, since it was the summer of President Truman House. Very nice to see, an obligatory stop in Key West.

  • Early in the morning, I was the first and only visitors and enjoyed a very personal Privatfürhung through the rooms of the holiday home of Truman. Rebecca, the museums guide told me pretty much everything you need to know about this House, but also about the history of the whole system not only over the President Truman. May not be missing at a key West visit safely. Unfortunately, it is forbidden to make photos of the building, as it is used still by the President inside, but there are enough pictures of it on the Internet.

  • Would highly recommend for families as it has lots of cannons and places for kids to run around and learn about history. I would plan about 30-45 mins to visit.  more »

  • It was a winter White House for the former POTUS Harry Truman. A good place to get into the history, the time around the WW2. Just as you enter, there is a souvenir shop with a wide range of accessories, mugs, badges etc with various American symbols and identities as well as those associated with Harry Truman. There is a free to visit part of the museum with various photographs of that time and quotes from the president on various topics. A good place to visit.
  • The history of the house was interesting and our tour guide was very knowledgeable. Parking options are poor but that is true with all things in this area. Recommend renting a scooter to get around. Parking is free and much easier to find with a scooter. Overall, a good way to spend 30 minutes out of the heat.
  • Nice little museum with a lot of historical artifacts tied to a very interesting historical story that many may not have known. Grounds are beautiful as well. Did not do tour but heard it was great and takes you though more of the property.
  • Beautiful and fascinating piece of ongoing American history. Everyone goes to Hemingway's house, but I actually enjoyed the Little White House better. It's fully air conditioned (Hemingway's house only recently installed AC in some of the upstairs rooms and they pack the tour groups so full that the rooms still get unbearably hot). And because it is still actively used by our American President's, it is still fully and beautifully furnished. The grounds are breathtaking and if you have time, take a stroll. Tours are 45 minutes long and start every 30 minutes or longer - so you may find yourself waiting quite awhile for the next tour (so be prepared). There is a covered outdoor seating area while waiting for the tour, or a free exhibit room inside the gift shop with rotating historical information.
  • Well preserved house, and our tour guide Bruce was knowledagble and friendly. The neighborhood is beautiful to walk through as well.
