Southernmost Point, Key West

3.5
#14 of 310 in Things to do in Key West
The very tip of the southeastern United States, Southernmost Point, is a popular spot for photos. A sign once marked the spot, but a more permanent concrete buoy stands at the lookout point today. The attraction's name is misleading--the actual southern point is in a private yard next to the buoy's location--but it’s close. Literally located at the Southernmost point of the U.S. right next to the Southernmost House. Expect to wait in a long line to take a picture. You came this far, might as well see the southernmost poi...  more »

Great. Big sea Buoy on the corner of street, nicely painted, a great photo op. Don't bother queuing, just walk along outside the barrier and get a quick snap while the queuers are changing over.  more »

Something to check on your bucket list (if it is even there). Was here for third time and also the very southernmost point of the US in Hawaii, which was more impressive tough the lack of a "monument"...  more »

hotel was absolutely a pleasure. All was sparkly clean & slept peacefully. EXTREMELY disappointed with the lady that checked us in. RUDE. NOT HAPPY WITH HER JOB..YOU COULD FEEL SHE DIDN'T WANT TO BE BOTHERED WITH ANYTHING. WORST ENCOUNTER THUS FAR ON THIS LONG AWAITED VACATION. FOR PRICE EXPECTED MORE COURTEOUS/ PROFESSIONAL SERVICE.

There was a long waiting line to get a picture with the "landmark southern most point" even at 100F! You can always choose to skip the photo op and just walk around... The view is stunning! While you're there, grab a tender coconut drink from local vendors - really makes the heat bearable!

Go earlier in the morning for the photo opp at the Southernmost Point. We got there around 9/9:30 AM. No line. The later it gets the hotter it gets in that line. Also, rent a bike when there. Best way to get around Key West. You'll want to explore all it has to offer. Too much on foot.

I cannot forget the awesome experience of driving down to Key West. Although I could not capture Key West in all its glory because of the rains that day, the place took my breath away. I enjoyed walking to the Southernmost Point and taking a picture against the giant concrete buoy, as the waves lashed and sprayed a gentle mist on you even as the rain poured. While you are here, you may not want to miss seeing the Hemingway museum and a walk down Duval Street (evening is even better).

It is a local icon, so go check it out. But don't expect much. It is a bit away from anything else around the island, but it does make for a good photo opportunity. Just be prepared to wait in a line of tourists to get that photo. That being said, it is a great spot to meet and chat with other people visiting the island. Definitely walk if you plan on staying a bit, because parking is scarce (and expensive). We saw a few people drive by and hop out just to grab a photo, but don't be those guys. There are meter maids frequenting this area, and it is a bit rude to cut the aforementioned line for a photo.

Where to stay in Key West

To explore the best of what Key West has to offer on foot, stay near Old Town, a picturesque neighborhood famous for its streets lined with tropical trees and gardens. Most hotels in this area feature rooftop decks, where you can meet friends for cocktails and enjoy ocean views at sunset. If you don't mind driving to where most of the action is, consider staying at a budget-priced inn or bed and breakfast on the eastern end of the island.
