Southernmost Point, Key West

3.5
The very tip of the southeastern United States, Southernmost Point, is a popular spot for photos. A sign once marked the spot, but a more permanent concrete buoy stands at the lookout point today. The attraction's name is misleading--the actual southern point is in a private yard next to the buoy's location--but it’s close. Put Southernmost Point into our Key West sightseeing planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Got to do it!!! Parking is tough. People lined up to take pictures. We just drove by. If it’s on your bucket list do it.  more »
  • I suppose you might as well stop for a photo if you're in Key West to say you've done it but otherwise nothing particularly special. The line does move fairly quickly so don't be too deterred by it un...  more »
  • We have stopped here before but wanted to see how things were post hurricane. Key West has done a great job getting things cleaned up and looking nice. The point was no different. We had heard that it...  more »

  • Very tourist trap-y. There's a lot of cool stuff in Key West, but this was probably the least interesting sight we saw there. The US-1 Mile 0 sign is a similar idea and much less crowded (though also less photogenic). If you're going to be walking in that area anyway, go ahead and swing by the southernmost point, because why not? But waiting in line to get your picture taken with it (which we did) is probably not worth it. Plus, it's not totally accurate--it's not the southernmost point on the island.
  • Great experience, love the keys. What an amazing vacation! And of course if you visit Key West you must get a picture at the southernmost point! I mean, who comes to Key West and doesn't?! Make sure you set aside at least a half an hour though. We went not realizing there would be a line to take pictures.
  • We came here for breakfast. It was delicious! I recommend the Key West Benedict. The service was nice and they didn't give me the side eye for bringing my two small children and were very accommodating. Will return.
  • The whole of Key west is beautiful. Nothing extra special at this point. Just get a picture clicked and leave. There was a coconut water cart nearby for natural coconut water lovers like me. Overpriced but it's a tourist spot, so who cares. Never seen someone drill a straw in coconuts before in the United States. Didn't taste as good as those we get in india though.
  • One of those "gotta get my picture here" things. We waited in line and got our pictures but nothing really special about it. At least we only waited about 15 minutes to get the pictures, wouldn't have been worth waiting much longer than that. Kids really thought it was cool though so it made them happy.

Where to stay in Key West

To explore the best of what Key West has to offer on foot, stay near Old Town, a picturesque neighborhood famous for its streets lined with tropical trees and gardens. Most hotels in this area feature rooftop decks, where you can meet friends for cocktails and enjoy ocean views at sunset. If you don't mind driving to where most of the action is, consider staying at a budget-priced inn or bed and breakfast on the eastern end of the island.
