#4 of 14 in Historic Sites in Key West
Tropical plants and colorful, exotic flowers line the patios and walkways of Key West Garden Club. The club operates on a non-profit basis, with all the plants in the gardens donated and maintained by volunteers and members. The club sits on the historical grounds of a Civil War fort, and aims to educate visitors on the topic of tropical gardening. Delicate furniture fills the patios, and white gazebos dot the seafront landscape, making it a scenic spot and popular venue for wedding photographs. • It is a garden located in the ruins of an ancient Fort of the 19th century. It is a special little place to go as a couple, when I went there were many butterflies (which promoted) but I imagine it depends on the weather. Touring it in 15', to be free is fine.

  • Great place to visit. One of the few free things to see and do in Key West. Built in an old fort with tons of natural exhibits.
  • Beaitiful garden with easy parking. One of only a few places in Key West that are free. Definite worth a visit!!
  • “The greeter was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the walk especially the orchid garden. There was a visitor there with her bird in a stroller made it that much more special.”
  • Breathtaking free gardens in an unfinished civil way fort. Definitely worth a thirty minute stop!
  • I happened to walk past here once on a trip and I make it a stop every time I come now. This garden is unique for its setting and beautifully kept. You can also observe plenty of butterflies or sit in the shade on the old walls and watch the pelicans fish and the waves gently roll in. Admission is free but they accept donations which I think are more than warranted for what you get.

Where to stay in Key West

To explore the best of what Key West has to offer on foot, stay near Old Town, a picturesque neighborhood famous for its streets lined with tropical trees and gardens. Most hotels in this area feature rooftop decks, where you can meet friends for cocktails and enjoy ocean views at sunset. If you don't mind driving to where most of the action is, consider staying at a budget-priced inn or bed and breakfast on the eastern end of the island.
