Key West Cemetery, Key West

4.1
#4 of 14 in Historic Sites in Key West
At the center of Old Town, Key West Cemetery reveals the quirky history of this small city and its past residents. After a hurricane destroyed the former burial grounds, the city purchased land to establish this new cemetery in 1847. The main entrance at Passover and Angela Streets hands out pamphlets with a map and directions for a self-guided walking tour, or you can visit the website ahead of time to print off your copy. The tour suggests visiting the graves of William Curry, Florida’s first millionaire; “Sloppy” Joe Russell, Key West’s most popular barman; and B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, a hypochondriac whose headstone reads “I told you I was sick”; among other interesting characters who shaped the past of this city. • On high ground, after storms in the 1800s washed away seaside cemeteries. The city sponsors guided tours of historic graves twice a year, but self-guided tours are available every day. Notably, a section for sailors killed in 1898 when the Maine exploded in Havana's harbor is still maintained by the Navy. There's also a section dedicated to the martyrs of Cuba's 1868 uprising for democracy. Some of the statuary and inscriptions ("I told you I was sick", "I'm just resting my eyes") will give you a hint of how hallowed this place is to us. It's a lovely stroll through the island's history.
  • This is a cool stop for unusual history in Key West with a self-guided tour. Free maps are provided at the entrance station and I would say don't go in without one! There are so many interesting facts and small stories within. It's a quiet, off-the-beaten-path place. Lots of iguanas hanging out as well. Park on a side-street, walk in, and when you're done, it's not even that far a walk to get to the hubabaloo of Duval and Mallory Square!
  • If your looking for a quiet and unusual place to stroll, The Key West Cemetery is it. You can get a free map at the main entrance. It will highlight the most talked about grave sites. If you go in the midday bring a hat and sunscreen. There is not much shade here for the living , but fun none the less. There are lots of iguanas as well.
  • There was so much history here. This is a must see and worth a walk through. R.I.P. Key West.
  • MUST DO while in Key West. Take time to pay your respects and read the legendary Tombstones.
