Key West Cemetery, Key West

4.1
#5 of 14 in Historic Sites in Key West
At the center of Old Town, Key West Cemetery reveals the quirky history of this small city and its past residents. After a hurricane destroyed the former burial grounds, the city purchased land to establish this new cemetery in 1847. The main entrance at Passover and Angela Streets hands out pamphlets with a map and directions for a self-guided walking tour, or you can visit the website ahead of time to print off your copy. The tour suggests visiting the graves of William Curry, Florida’s first millionaire; “Sloppy” Joe Russell, Key West’s most popular barman; and B.P. “Pearl” Roberts, a hypochondriac whose headstone reads “I told you I was sick”; among other interesting characters who shaped the past of this city. • Interesting cemetery to bike to and walk through. A memorial to the USS Maine which was sank in the Havana Harbor during the Spanish-American War.  more »
  • The cemetery requires you to walk thru it as motorized vehicles are not allowed. I would suggest going in the later part of day to make it tolerable but the site is very cool to walk around.  more »
  • This is one big cemetery with above ground crypts that are very old and unique. The "drawers" for those who were cremated have small plaques with a message----some that are very humerous "send offs." ...  more »

  • There was so much history here. This is a must see and worth a walk through. R.I.P. Key West.
  • Tough to find, but very cool and worth checking out while in the Keys
  • Lots of history; interesting to see how much concrete and above-ground tombs are used. There is a unique area in memoriam to Cuban freedom fighters. Lots and lots of huge lizards and iguanas around, sunning themselves on tombs.
  • There's serious stuff, such as a significant memorial to the victims of the USS Maine, and quirky stuff, like a gigantic conch-shaped headstone. Pick up a map as you enter the main gate.
  • Interesting place to visit. So much to see and ponder and that was all before one of the caretakers graciously gave us a map with points of interest. I would recommend going in the early morning or early evening. There isn't a lot of shade and we went when it was quite warm. Sun hat or parasol would have been good. The iguanas are definitely a strange and creepy site as they dart in and out from under gravestones.
