Enjoy views of the city and Colorado River from the top of Mount Bonnell, considered the highest point in Austin. Named for George Bonnell, who served as commissioner of Indian Affairs of the Texas Republic, the mountain became a tourist attraction shortly after settlers began to build the city of Austin 335 m (1,100 ft) below. Park at the base and hike up. At the top, enjoy a picnic on the shaded viewing deck with benches that face the water.
