Originally built in 1517, when the landlord was George Green, one-time Pindar of Wakefield, who was supposed to have had connections with Robin Hood. The present house, built in 1878, was once patronised by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Until the 1980s, it housed a regular 'Old Time Music Hall'. In 1986, the premises were bought by the Grand Order of Water Rats and the name of the venue was changed to the Water Rats.

Excellent place. I went there twice for breakfast and the food was excellent. Having the possibility to order a vegetarian full English was pleasant. The service was delightful and one of the waiters, who recognized us the second time, even offered a discount. Very nice and business-minded move.
You do realise that there is a hospital next door? Where sleep studies are carried out? Maybe a licensing visit would be beneficial? I’d like to know if you got there first or the hospital.. and how you got a licence to play such loud bass music!! I’m avoiding the whole area thanks to your place. With thanks.
