Russell Square, London

#342 of 3,688 in Things to do in London
Russell Square is a large garden square in Bloomsbury, in the London Borough of Camden, built predominantly by James Burton. It is near the University of London's main buildings and the British Museum. To the north is Woburn Place, and to the south-east is Southampton Row. Russell Square tube station is nearby to the north-east.
It is named after the surname of the Earls and Dukes of Bedford; the freehold remains with the Bedford Estate, though the square is managed by Camden Council. The gardens are Grade II-listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
In 2005, two terrorist bombings occurred near the square. One of the bombings was on a London Underground train between King's Cross St Pancras tube station and Russell Square tube station, and another was on a bus on Tavistock Square, near Russell Square. To commemorate the victims, flowers were laid at the square. In 2016 the Russell Square stabbing took place.

  • This is a nice spot to just sit in a bit of nature. There is a little cafe there and an open fountain which kids would love to play in on the couple of days of summer they have each year. There...  more »
  • We go for the egg sandwiches at the one of few remaining Cabmen’s shelters. So unique and a real bargain.  more »

  • Russell Square is one of my all time favourite green spaces in Central London. With its four quarters of green space, central fountain, wisteria arch and cafe, you can spend a wonderful afternoon with friends and spend the day eating, drinking and kicking the footy around. Summertime is so popular though that the extra foot traffic kills off the grass and leaves a dust bowl. Springtime is usually best to see this place at its best!
  • Massive and beautiful landscape within the city centre of London surrounded by number of hotels and university. It is a nice place to relax with friends or loved ones. It is not usually crowded. It is well maintained and very close to Russell Square London underground station possibly named after it. Trees provide good shades during summer and makes it an idle place to chill out and have fun
