The last thing that King Charles I of England saw before his execution, Banqueting House holds an important place in the English architectural genre of banqueting houses. Finished in 1622, this particular banqueting house was the first completed of its kind in a neoclassical style, which served as a turning point in English architecture. Learn more of the building's history in a brief film shown before you enter the main room. Follow an audio guide as you move through the sizeable room. Panels painted by Peter Paul Rubens in 1635 cover the 16.7 m (55 ft) ceiling. Grab a bean bag chair to relax and absorb the exquisite detailing in the artwork as the audio guide provides background information. So, the Rubens ceiling is fantastic as is the room but to my surprise as I stepped out, across the street Boris is playing reshuffle the deck and who should turn up ? See if you can identify them... more »
A must see (and listen to the guide) when in London. First time since I first came to visit London, 34 years ago. The ceiling by Peter Paul Rubens, is something to behold and the remarkable history of the building very interesting. Could do with the non original bland walls being restored.
Incredible and absolutely worth a visit. Tickets to visit are relatively cheap and what you get with it, makes it more than worth it. Staff were friendly too. To begin with, there’s a very informative video about the history of the building with lots of fascinating insights and, in addition, you get a free audio guide too. With all that said, the main attraction is of course the majestic hall. A masterpiece. Words can’t do just to how high the ceilings are, how impeccable the details. Really phenomenal. In a prime location amongst many other tourist attractions and definitely good for an hour or so, especially on a gloomy day.
