30 St Mary Axe (known previously as the Swiss Re Building), informally known as The Gherkin, is a commercial skyscraper in London's primary financial district, the City of London. It was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004. With 41 floors, it is 180 metres (591 ft) tall and stands on the former sites of the Baltic Exchange and Chamber of Shipping, which were extensively damaged in 1992 in the Baltic Exchange bombing by a device placed by the Provisional IRA in St Mary Axe, a narrow street leading north from Leadenhall Street.By using our London trip itinerary app, you can arrange your visit to 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) and other attractions in London.
After plans to build the 92-storey Millennium Tower were dropped, 30 St Mary Axe was designed by Norman Foster and Arup Group. It was erected by Skanska; construction started in 2001.
The building has become a recognisable landmark of London, and it is one of the city's most widely recognised examples of contemporary architecture.

30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin) Reviews
My daughter knows my love of architecture and my love of a good cocktail so she combined the two with this brilliant trip to this iconic landmark. The building itself is stunning as you walk up to..... more »
180 metres tall tower shaped like a bullet but known as The Gherkin, can be seen from many perspectives - though we only got a glimpse of it when viewing from The Shard. Good from Tower Bridge and... more »
Fab street..one of the City's finest. Stand under the gherkin on the east side and gaze in awe at the unsung masterpiece that is Holland House. Peek through the door and if you're brave try and blag your way down thru the ornately tiled entrance and stairs to the loos. Incredible building...try and find the black marble carved liner round the side. You won't be disappointed!!
It’s an office building, interesting to see it up close but not a lot in the area. The top 2 floors are a restaurant and bar with nice views but other than that it is not open to the public except maybe during special events. Walking distance to some Jack the Ripper sites and Tower of London. Brick Lane if you want a good curry is also reasonably close. There are some interesting churches also in the neighborhood.
