Basilica del Santo Nino, Cebu City

4.3
#1 of 103 in Historic Sites in Visayas
Admire the oldest Christian image in the Philippines, and pay tribute to a revered patron saint of Cebu City at Basilica del Santo Nino, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. Founded in 1565 and originally built from wood, the church houses a 30 cm (12 in) tall statue of Jesus as a child, adorned in fantastic luxurious robes and presented to a local queen by Magellan as a baptismal gift. A cradle of Christianity in the East recognized by the Pope in 1965, the church, ruined three times in fires, has been restored, and also survived a recent earthquake. Thousands of visitors come here to see the wooden figure of baby Jesus made by Flemish artists. With our world travel planner, Cebu City attractions like Basilica del Santo Nino can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Cebu's bastion of faith and piety. Can be crowded with devotees and tourists. It's where Catholic fervor and devotion mixed with local religious practices mix. Historic and interesting architecture.

Inside the church is the most famous religious icon in the Philippines, a statue of Santo NiƱo. Crowded during Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Bring water, towel and handheld fan

Place is well preserved and restoration work on the tower went well. Great place if you are a tourist or a Sto. Nino devotee. If you are neither then its just another church. Watch out for beggars and pickpockets.

Where to stay in Cebu City

The most popular place to stay in Cebu City remains uptown, particularly around the university district near Junquera Street station. Here you'll find a good range of hotels, hostels, and guesthouses of varying quality, but with a well-established base level representing value for money. Further north, look along Dalan Osmena to find a good number of standard and luxury hotels located north and south of the roundabout. The downtown area has more closely knitted streets, with just a few guesthouses located along primarily residential roads.
