Basilica del Santo Nino, Cebu City

Admire the oldest Christian image in the Philippines, and pay tribute to a revered patron saint of Cebu City at Basilica del Santo Nino, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the country. Founded in 1565 and originally built from wood, the church houses a 30 cm (12 in) tall statue of Jesus as a child, adorned in fantastic luxurious robes and presented to a local queen by Magellan as a baptismal gift. A cradle of Christianity in the East recognized by the Pope in 1965, the church, ruined three times in fires, has been restored, and also survived a recent earthquake. Thousands of visitors come here to see the wooden figure of baby Jesus made by Flemish artists. • This is the place where you can relax your mind and be thankful everyday, The history of Cebu is preserved in this church. It is just along the road so very accessible if you want to know some of the ...  more »
  • Small but still has that “oldie but goodie” kinda look. It is nothing extravagant but good enough. We wanted to tour this place because I was wearing short sleeve :/ Otherwise, I’ve seen other basilic...  more »
  • Good for soul searching. Well worth it to go there and be with yourself. Also good to go on this time. Not as crowded.  more »

  • From the outside you'll think that its just any old church but inside the church its so solemn. It is very rare that you can get to take photos inside since its always full with tourists and pilgrims. Thankful I got to take these photos.
  • The architecture, the statues of saints, and overall design of this basilica are beautiful! Take a moment to soak it in. Sit in the pews even if you’re not Catholic. Look for the pagan gargoyles guarding the doors of the church. Respect the centuries of culture and beliefs held by this place. In the church grounds, there’s plenty more to experience such as lighting of candles and visiting Magellan’s cross. Taking of photos isn’t allowed during mass.
  • it is calm but we can see good architectures. local people try christmas challenge. they go there every early moning for 9 days. because mass is held there then. they believe that if they visit completely, their dream come true.
  • One of the reasons for our Cebu vacation is to visit Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu and glad, we did! It's like living my youth once again, after not coming to Cebu for half a century. Its beauty and the positive vibe never changed.
  • One of the most beautiful churches I've been to in the Philippines. The relatively plain facade is in contrast to the interiors. Be sure to check the paintings along the hallways that surround the indoor garden. Full of people many times of the day. The Cebuanos' devotion to the Sto Niño is inspiring. rainbowjournal
