Pedra Furada, Jericoacoara

Must see · Geologic Formation · Nature / Park
The Arched Rock, Pedra Furada has become a symbol of Jericoacoara and is a collection of rock shelters used for thousands of years by human populations. The rock formations provide evidence that people may have entered this hemisphere 21,000–40,000 years ago, as opposed to previous beliefs that stated humans from the New World arrived no longer than 15,000 years ago. Controversy surrounding whether the formation was formed naturally by ecological methods or by man-made early settlers is something that you can determine for yourself when you visit.

Walking east from town along the shore you'll first pass Malhada Beach, which is a smaller beach popular with surfers. At low tide, most of the beach is walkable, otherwise take the higher path along Serrote hill. The walk takes about 2 hours in total. If you're traveling with children, consider renting a dune buggy, then you'll have to walk about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) along the beach at low tide. If you prefer, you can hire a guide service with knowledge of high and low tides to bring you safely to the rock.
